CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
"I am the Wind!"
—Hayate in Dead or Alive 5.

Hayate (Kanji: 疾風 ("fresh breeze"), Katakana: ハヤテ, Rōmaji: Hayate) is a shinobi and the eighteenth master of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan. He is eldest child and only son of Shiden and Ayame, making him Kasumi's older brother, and Ayane's older half-brother. He is also friends and allies with Ryu Hayabusa. Although he was first mentioned in the first Dead or Alive in 1996, Hayate's official debut appearance was in the 1999 title Dead or Alive 2 as Ein; an amnesiac Karate master. After being used as a test subject by DOATEC for Project Epsilon, Hayate gained amnesia and trained in the art of karate, going by the name of "Ein." By entering the second Dead or Alive Tournament, he was able to regain his lost memories and became Hayate once again, finally appearing as himself in 2001 for Dead or Alive 3. Throughout the series, Hayate’s goal is the protection of his family and clan and often finds himself entering the Dead or Alive Tournament to put a stop to DOATECH’s corrupt plans.
APPEARANCE
Hayate is a young man of Japanese origin, roughly 25 years old. He has a slightly tanned complexion and his appearance acknowledges his nationality, with his facial features (narrow eyes, a slim face, and pointed chin) inherited from his father and his hair and eye color inherited from his mother. He has light-brown, straight hair, parted in the center and styled in a short cut that reaches his jawline, and narrow honey-brown eyes. One noticeable feature in all of his appearances is his muscular build, which is apparent in his arms and when he goes shirtless. He is very well-built and has a lot of athletic definitions, with highly defined biceps and arms, broad shoulders and chest, carved abdominal six-pack, and a muscular back. In terms of physical appearance, his “Ein” persona doesn’t look much different. The main difference between Hayate and Ein is Hayate usually has a more serious expression on his face while Ein usually appears more relaxed and friendly.

Like most of the men in Dead or Alive, Hayate prefers clothing ranges suited to his tastes. He is typically seen in shinobi armor and body-suits, which could include shin and wrist guards, chainmail, and masks to cover the lower half of his face. Two recurring elements to his costumes include his sword, the Jinran-Maru, and a metal headband which he will wear around his forehead. He will also wear some casual, everyday clothing from time to time, in order to blend in with normal people and hide his shinobi identity. In his “Ein” persona, however, Hayate surprisingly wears a lot of costumes that expose his skin. His usual attire consists of an open black shirt, with only a mesh shirt underneath, complete with jeans and boots. One of his reoccurring outfits consists of a pair of red, slightly-unbuttoned pants, chains on his wrists and ankles, going shirtless and barefoot. Other outfits include a silver shirt unbuttoned to his stomach, a casual tracksuit unzipped all the way to his navel, and a traditional, white karate Gi. One recurring element in is costumes are his black sports sunglasses, seen several times throughout the series.

For Dead or Alive 5, Hayate was re-vamped to have more realistic, harder-looking, mature features, including a squared chin and a lower brow. Similarly, Ein’s appearance was modified to give him a more realistic appearance, with smaller eyes and less anime-like facial features. While both retain their signature hair style, muscular builds, and outfit themes, Hayate and Ein appear to have lighter, more golden-toned skin, making them look closer to their Japanese roots. While Ein retains his classic outfits as primary clothing, Hayate has a new suit of shinobi armor, trading his white-and-chainmail style for a black-and-armored style. Additionally, in the later versions of the game, Hayate (and by proxy,Ein) appears to be more sexualized, as for the first time, he was given two risqué costumes: a MMA-style wrestling outfit with only black briefs and fingerless gloves, and a beach outfit with only a pair of white-and-blue, tight-fitting, boxer-brief-style swim trunks, which are his most revealing costumes in the series.
PERSONALITY
Being a both a shinobi and current Master of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan, Hayate has a powerful sense of duty when it comes to his role as a leader and as a shinobi. The safety of his clan and family, as well as stable peace are among his utmost priorities. Sometimes, however, this devotion puts him at odds with his emotions. For example, he is so devoted to the clan's rules and traditions that he would even hunt down his own runaway sister, Kasumi, albeit with much reluctance.

Beneath his sense of duty, Hayate is an honorable, caring soul when it comes to his family, friends, and allies. Despite the feuding rivalry between his sister, Kasumi, and half-sister, Ayane, he is close to both girls and he tries to balance his duties as a shinobi and his duties as a brother. This leads to his continued attempts to retain a friendship with both of them while managing the complex situation of clan rules, something which has finally paid off for him in the series’ current point. He has also shown that he is a very protective older brother; when Brad Wong tried to hit on Ayane, Hayate was quick to use brute force to get the man away from her.

Although he could easily kill most enemies, his honor and nature prevent him from engaging in lethal force unless there is no other way. When it comes to his fighting ability, Hayate can come off as disinterested or arrogant before a fight depending on the opponent and his mood. His “arrogance,” however, is fueled from self-confidence in his abilities and not from misplaced pride. Even with his great skill, Hayate shows respect to people whom he recognizes in seniority over him, either in age, prestige, or skill, as seen in his interaction with Gen Fu, the elder Iron Fist master.

While very serious when it comes to important matters, he isn't above having a bit of fun from time to time. Hayate has also shown to have a competitive nature, seen mainly with his friendly rivalry with his friend, Ryu Hayabusa, the next leader of the Hayabusa Clan. Since both Hayate and Hayabusa were born to be the next masters of their clans and follow on from their fathers, Hayate trusts Hayabusa to help him when in need and vice versa, showing a good faith towards people he’s close to.

In regards to Ein, this persona’s personality is somewhat similar to Hayate as he seems to be reserved and quiet. However, Ein can seem ignorant at times; he would rather fight than converse to find out answers, a repercussion of his amnesia. Unlike Hayate, however, Ein is slightly more outgoing and friendly, as he is unconsciously free of the shinobi clan rules and restrictions. Like most fighters in the series, he is skilled and dedicated to his style, with a great understanding of martial arts even though his conscious memory has not returned. He is respected for this understanding, as Hitomi sought him out in order to help rebuild her father’s dojo despite not knowing his true nature. In his spare time, Ein practices breaking bottles with his hand by slicing the tops of them off in a demonstration of skill and entertainment, suggesting enjoyment in simple pleasures and a relaxed lifestyle.
ETYMOLOGY
The kanji used to spell Hayate's name (疾風) means "fresh breeze". This serves to distinguish Hayate's character in terms of his skills as a ninja and his wind like nature, being as gentle as a breeze to his friends and family and as dangerous as a storm to his enemies and opponents.

The name "Ein" likely comes from "eins," the German word for "one" or "first." It's been noted that the letters of "Ein" are also the first, middle, and last letters of Epsilon. Whether or not this was intentional remains to be seen.
COSTUMES
Being a dedicated martial artist and master of his shinobi clan, most of Hayate’s outfits are martial-art-inspired shinobi uniforms, preferring armored shozoku, and Japanese attire. Three recurring theme for Hayate’s outfits are his metal headband, shinobi weapons (specifically his sword, Jinran-Maru), and a shinobi mask covering his nose down, referencing his ninja heritage and fighting style. Similarly, being a dedicated martial artists and amnesiac wanderer, most of Ein’s outfits are inspired by tough, casual wear, giving him a standoffish or intimidating appearance.

Recurring costumes for Hayate include his white and red shinobi outfits (since Dead or Alive 3). For Ein, his black jacket or trench coat, mesh shirt, and sunglasses and his shirtless, red jeans with chains on his wrists and ankles (since Dead or Alive 2), referencing his “escaped project” status.

The following is a catalogue of alternative costumes available for Hayate and Ein in Dead or Alive 5.

ABILITIES, QUOTES, TRIVIA
ABILITIES
Hayate is a practitioner and perfectionist of Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu (Tenjinmon Style).

Ninjutsu (Kanji: 忍術, Rōmaji: Ninjūtsu) is the amalgam of martial arts, strategy, and tactics of unconventional warfare and guerilla warfare practiced by the shinobi. While there are several styles of modern ninjutsu, not all can be related to the historic practice of ninjutsu in Japan, so as to be considered a koryū. Ninjutsu is the fighting style that is used by all the shinobi of the Dead or Alive series.

Ninjutsu was developed by groups of people mainly from the Iga (present day Mie Prefecture) and Kōka Provinces (present day Shiga Prefecture) of Japan. Throughout history the shinobi have been seen as assassins, scouts and spies. They are mainly noted for their use of stealth and deception. They have been associated in the public imagination with activities that are considered criminal by modern standards. Throughout history many different schools (ryū) have taught their unique versions of ninjutsu. An example of these is the Togakure-ryū. Legend says that this ryū was developed after a defeated samurai warrior called Daisuke Togakure escaped to the region of Iga. Later he came in contact with the warrior-monk Kain Doshi who taught him a new way of viewing life and the means of survival (ninjutsu).

Ninjutsu was developed as a collection of fundamental survivalist techniques in the warring state of feudal Japan. The ninja used their art to ensure their survival in a time of violent political turmoil. Ninjutsu included methods of gathering information, and techniques of non-detection, avoidance, and misdirection. Ninjutsu can also involve training in disguise, escape, concealment, archery, medicine, explosives, and poisons.

Skills relating to espionage and assassination were highly useful to warring factions in feudal Japan. Because these activities were seen as dishonorable, Japanese warriors hired people who existed below Japan's social classes to perform these tasks. These persons were literally called "non-humans" (非人, hinin). At some point the skills of espionage became known collectively as ninjutsu, and the people who specialized in these tasks were called "Shinobi no Mono" (忍びの者).

Despite the large presence of ninjas in popular culture, there is little to no actual basis for ninjutsu being its own martial art. The idea of a separate martial style exclusive to ninjas was popularized during the 1980's, which saw the rise of numerous ninja-based media, such as movies and games. Even the "ninja sword" (忍者刀, Ninjatō) commonly shown as a shorter and straighter variant of the katana, has no historical basis.

Mugen Tenshin Ninjutsu (Tenjinmon Style)
This is a type of ninjutsu that focuses on evasion and defense. Tenjinmon practitioners train in order to acquire superhuman physical strength and battle technique and are highly resistant to physical pressure. Hayate is a master of this style of ninjutsu and his fighting skills focuses on power rather than long combos. Many of his attacks have extremely fast start-up and inflict decent amounts of damage, and he has several punch techniques that can be charged for even greater damage. He can best be described as a merger between the styles of his alter-ego Ein and Kasumi, balancing speed, power and ease of use.

As a shinobi, Hayate has several mysterious abilities. One such is teleportation, allowing him to leave one place and arrive at another without the need of walking and usually used for travelling long distances or for a quick escape from danger. Actions performed for teleporting differ from person to person and Hayate typically teleports in a flash of light or gust of wind, sometimes accompanied by leaves or black and white feathers. Sometimes this teleportation can leave translucent afterimages of himself behind, further confusing the opponent. He can mix his teleportation in with his fighting style, seeming to attack in rapid succession from different points around his opponent. Beyond teleportation, his training has given him speed above human ability, such as moving beyond the speed of sight of his opponents and even dodging bullets from helicopter-mounted Gatling guns. In addition to his speed, Hayate’s physical abilities and reflexes are superhuman, enabling him to jump astounding distances vertically and horizontally, as well as absorb shock from landing from these same heights.

Apart from martial arts and movement, Hayate is well-versed in shinobi weaponry, specializing in swordplay and archery. He is capable of mixing in blade strikes and finishers with his martial arts and acrobatic movements and often makes use of his sword to end or incapacitate enemies in one strike, once taking out a squadron of five soldiers with high-tech armor and sensors without getting hit. His archery skills make use of a high-tension war bow and he’s been seen taking down airships and helicopters with one shot, oftentimes from impractical locations such as heavily-forested areas and from atop a moving truck on the highway.

Finally, as a practitioner of ninjutsu, Hayate possesses the ability to employ Ninpo (忍法, Ninpō, lit. "Ninja Arts"), another name for a form of offensive and defensive magic in the shinobi world. While this aspect of his repertoire is not touched on much in the series, he’s used one spell to enchant the head of his arrow before firing it, which resulted in the explosion of an entire airship once struck, and another spell allowing him to sense the presence of others nearby without the need for equipment. Unarguably, his strongest skill in this area is the Torn Sky Blast (奥義「裂空迅風殺」, Ōgi: Rekkū Jinpū Satsu; Secret Technique: Lethal Wind Quick Air Slash, literally translated as Air Fissure Killing Wind). This is a powerful and deadly lightning-type Ninpo technique that allows the user to summon electric-like energy from their hands and shoot the energy toward their target, seriously injuring or kiling anyone in the way of the beam. Hayate’s particular color of the technique’s lightning is white.

Karate
Hayate is also a master of Karate, a martial art learned during his time as “Ein” and utilized by him when he adopts his persona. Trace elements of Karate make their way into Hayate’s ninjutsu fighting style, but not vice versa.

Karate (Kanji: 空手, Rōmaji: Karate) is a type of martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands, developed from indigenous fighting methods called "te" (手, literally "hand") and Chinese Kenpō. A karate practitioner is called a "karateka."

Karate is primarily a striking art which uses punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands and ridge-hands. Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles. Karate can be practiced as budo (self-development), as a sport, as a combat sport, or as self-defense training; Traditional karate places emphasis on budo. Modern Japanese style training emphasizes the psychological elements incorporated into a proper kokoro (attitude) such as perseverance, fearlessness, virtue, and leadership skills. Sport karate places emphasis on exercise and competition. The use of weapons is an important training activity in some styles.

As a karateka, Ein is a medium-damage strike character with excellent high-position combos. His best fighting focus stems from an aggressive standpoint where he can position himself close to the enemy and land powerful blows. Contrary, due to his long arms and legs, he can also run a successful defensive fight, staying out of reach until the opponent leaves an opening for him to strike a counter blow and mount a counterattack. However, a weakness of his style is the slight "wind-up" timeframe needed prior to the execution of certain powerful attacks, though it can be an effective “baiting” counterattack. Another weakness of this style is a lack of good mix-ups and low attacks, leaving Ein relying on rush down and pokes at low level to make up for this. To compensate, he does possess a few “interruption attacks” that keep opponents off-guard and compliment his aggressive fighting style. Of final note, due to his power and speed, Ein noticeably excels when his opponent is against a wall.

Trivia
Hayate is the only ninja character that has yet to win a tournament. He also states in Dead or Alive 5 that he has no interest in participating.

Ein's skin is slightly different than Hayate’s, more like his color in Dead or Alive 2 to Dead or Alive 4. It can be more noticeable in their faces in the win pose.

Ein's hobby of slicing the tops off of bottles with his bare hands is likely a reference to a scene from The Karate Kid, where Mr. Miyagi performs the same feat.

Ein and Lisa share a tag pose in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. The tag pose seems to relate to the period in which Lisa was involved in the experiments done to Ein.

Hayate is mentioned through the Dead or Alive Xtreme sub-series through Hitomi as the player interacts with a romance novel, picnic basket, and sachertorte.

Although Hayate and Ein are ultimately the same person, they share two tag throws as well as opening and win poses with each other for the first time in and since Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate.

Ein and Hayate's tag into is a nod to Shen Wai Shen Fa, a duplication technique used by the Monkey King in the classic novel Journey to the West and popularly applied as a Ninjutsu ability in many Ninja stories.

Although Hayate did appear as a playable character in Dead or Alive 2 as his alter-ego Ein and was heavily mentioned, Hayate is still considered a brand new character in Dead or Alive 3, since it was the first time in the series to play as Hayate with a brand new fighting style.

He's only major ninja character (save for Rachel) who doesn't appear in the Ninja Gaiden series. But he was mentioned and his sword does appear as Ryu Hayabusa's temporary weapon when his Dragon Sword fused with his right arm by a brainwashed Regent of Mask/Theodore Higgins' Grip of Murder spell curse.

Interestingly, Hayate still uses his Ein persona for undercover disguise purposes on occasion and for certain missions. However, one of these covers was blown in canon, particularly because two different fighters know Ein's true identity and recognize him:
1. Hitomi finds out Ein's true identity as a Mugen Tenshin Ninja clan member, Hayate, when Ayane mistaken Hitomi for Kasumi in disguise.
2. Zack becomes aware of the Mugen Tenshin and Hayabusa ninjas' identities from Helena after saving her from DOATEC’s destruction and being promoted as head of DOATEC's tournament sponsorship.

HISTORY & RELATIONS
History
Early Life
Hayate is the eldest child and only son of Shiden, the now-former leader of the Mugen Tenshin Clan, and Ayame. He was born to be the next leader of the clan, to follow on from his father. He seemed to have a happy childhood, training in the art of the clan, Tenjinmon-styled ninjutsu, with his younger sister Kasumi, who loved him dearly. After Genra requested to Shiden for Ayane - the village's "cursed child" and his foster daughter - to begin her training, Hayate started to form a friendship with the girl, treating her with kindness, which most of the clan didn't give her. The two formed a strong bond, but soon after, Ayame admitted to Ayane that she was her daughter, meaning that she was a half-sister to Hayate and Kasumi. Despite this life-changing revelation, and the falling-out between Ayane and Kasumi, Hayate reminded to have strong relationships with both of his sisters over the years. During his early life, Hayate also became good friends with Ryu Hayabusa, who like him was next in line to be the master of his own clan, the Hayabusa Clan.

Raidou's Attack and the Aftermath
When Hayate was 23, Raidou, Shiden's traitorous brother who was banished from the clan, returned to their village and attacked the clan in an attempt to "steal" the Torn Sky Blast ninpō attack. Hayate and Ayane were at the front line to defend the village. Ayane attacked Raidou to defend her brother, but was quickly defeated. Hayate ran to her aid, but when Raidou called him a "weakling" for hiding behind a woman, Hayate attacked him in rage. He used the Torn Sky Blast to fight Raidou, despite Ayane's protests, but he was overcome by his uncle's superior fighting skill, and the Torn Sky Blast was stolen from him. As both of their ninpō attacks collided, the resulting explosion threw Hayate into a tree, cracking his spine and sending him into a near-fatal coma. Despite Kasumi dutifully looking after him, Hayate's remained in his coma and seemed doomed to stay in that state, with some of the shinobi considering him to be "dead". Because of this, his entitlement to the title of clan master was passed down to Kasumi. Soon after Kasumi learned the truth about the cause of Hayate's coma from Ayane, she fled the village to seek revenge against Raidou for Hayate during the first Dead or Alive World Combat Championship, despite the fact that leaving the village without permission branded her as a runaway shinobi.

Project Epsilon, Ein, and the Second DOA Tournament
Shortly after the events of the first tournament, Hayate - still in his coma - was kidnapped by Kasumi α, a science product and clone of Kasumi of and for the Dead or Alive Tournament Executive Committee and was taken to DOATEC Germany, one of their research labs located near the Black Forest. While in their possession, Hayate became the sole subject for Project Epsilon, created by Victor Donovan and headed by Lisa Hamilton, and was made to undergo various experiments as part of the project. DOATEC planned to create the perfect superhuman weapon by reconstructing Hayate, just as they were using Kasumi's DNA around the time for the same purpose. Hayate was kept at DOATEC Germany and, using the experiments to enhance his body's nervous system, the project team managed to repair his spine and bring him out of his death-like coma (which he entered after being seriously injured by Raidou), but did little else to him at the time. Shortly before the second tournament began, Ryu Hayabusa attacked DOATEC Germany to save Kasumi (who was also being held in the same building) and caused the building to set alight. The DOATEC staff, along with Hayate and Lisa, were taken onto helicopters to escape the blaze and continue their experiments at another DOATEC lab, but the helicopter Hayate and Lisa were on suffered engine failure and crash-landed in the Black Forest. Although wounded, Hayate got away from Lisa (who purposefully allowed his escape, since he was considered a ‘failed experiment’ and she was morally conflicted over the event) and the crash alive and ran into the forest. There he was lucky enough to stumble into a clearing and run into Hitomi, a Karate student who was training in the forest, mistaking her as Kasumi before collapsing. Due to the traumatic events he went through, Hayate began to suffer from extreme amnesia, and he could not remember his past or even his own name. He was taken in by Hitomi's family, and ended up going by the name of "Ein". While he was staying with Hitomi and her father, Ein worked in the family's dojo. With training from Hitomi’s father, Ein mastered the art of karate in a short period of time and was made an instructor in the dojo. However, wanting to find out who he was and where he came from, Ein left to join the second tournament on a journey of self-discovery and find answers to his lost past. During the early rounds in the tournament, Ein encountered Hayabusa and Ayane, who both wondered if he is really Hayate and Helena Douglas, who talked about the failed Project Epsilon, which confused Ein. In his match with Hayabusa, he was defeated by the super ninja, which caused Ein to regain some memories about him. Sometime after the second tournament, Ein finally met up with Kasumi, whom he still didn't remember. Hayabusa encouraged them to fight, saying that when the blood of two siblings meet in battle, the very soul of a shinobi will awaken, and the siblings battled each other. Sure enough, after he defeated Kasumi and knocked her unconscious, Hayate's memories returned and he finally remembered who he was. Shortly afterwards, Genra appeared before them and revealed himself to be the one who broke the barrier that separates the Spirit World from Earth, allowing Bankotsubo to enter the human world and cause chaos. As the traitorous ninja made his leave, Hayate and Hayabusa confronted Ayane, who was under Genra's control, and Kasumi α, Kasumi's clone. Together with Hayabusa, they were victorious. After the fight, Hayabusa introduced Hayate to his friend, CIA agent Irene Lew who tells the men that the CIA have been watching DOATEC and their shady actions for some time. After Ayane regained consciousness, they soon realized that Kasumi disappeared, leaving Hayate in a highly worried state.

The Third DOA Tournament
After Genra turned against the clan, Hayate requested his father to allow him to hunt down the traitor, which made Shiden believe that Hayate may be ready to take over as the leader of the clan. Hayate wanted to find Kasumi first, but Ayane spoke against it, calling Kasumi a traitor and suggesting that she might have been consorting with Genra. Enraged by her words, Hayate slapped Ayane. Shiden rebuked the two for quarrelling, and dismissed Ayane, while asking Hayate to train with him, although Hayate didn't understand why. On a moonlit night at the Azuchi, Hayabusa tells Hayate that he was no match for the Jonin who once headed the Hajinmon. Hayate retorts that Hayabusa knew nothing about Genra, and challenged him to prove he could beat someone if he had to. He defeated Hayabusa, only to discover it was a fake copy Hayabusa had created using the substitution technique. Bewildered at first, Hayabusa told Hayate that they'd meet again in the upcoming third DOA tournament. Getting a lead on Kasumi's whereabouts in Kyoto, Hayate and Ayane join the third tournament. While on the Freedom Survivor, a private luxury cruise ship, Hayate disguised his identity by assuming his former amnesia identity, Ein. There Hayate met up Hitomi again for the first time since he left her family's home when he was Ein. Hayate introduced Ayane to Hitomi, who assumed that Ayane was Kasumi, the girl who Hayate was mumbling about when they first met. Angered for being mistaken for Kasumi, Ayane fought Hitomi. After the fight, Hayate revealed to Hitomi the truth about his shinobi identity before parting ways again, much to her surprise. Later, the siblings also crossed paths with the legendary Gen Fu, and his student Eliot. Hayate paid respect to Gen Fu's skills and reputation, before they engaged in a tag-team fight. Although Ayane became annoyed with Eliot and his lack of self-confidence, Gen Fu admired her fiery spirit and Eliot thanked her greatly for the fight, which caused Ayane to walk off, leaving Hayate trying to keep up with her. Sometime later, Ayane and Hayate argued about who should take down Genra; Hayate felt that as leader of the clan, it was his duty to take down the former master, but Ayane too felt it was her task, being Genra's foster daughter and heir. After fighting about it, they both agree to work together to take down Genra. During the rounds of the tournament, Hayate met with Helena Douglas, who recognized him as the subject of Project Epsilon. Hayate demanded to tell her why Genra joined DOATEC, but she claimed she didn't know, that Genra and even herself were just puppets that DOATEC controlled. After defeating Helena in battle, he told her that he would defeat Genra, and she should leave DOATEC for her own safety. A while later, Hayate and Ayane met up with Hayabusa and Irene, and the men engaged in battle to see who was the greater shinobi. The fight became extreme as the boys started a ninpo duel, but were stopped by Ayane as Irene was kidnapped by Christie. Hayabusa ran off to save Irene, but Hayate and Ayane realized that her kidnapping was just a distraction for Genra. The fallen master created a portal to Hellfire, and transformed into his powerful Omega form. The two shinobi try to take him down, but Genra proved too strong and they were starting to become overpowered by him. When Hayabusa realized that Christie was just a decoy, he quickly ran to aid his friends, and ran Genra through with the Dragon Sword. Before the monster could regenerate, Ayane and Hayate performed a duel-spell together and struck the final blow, killing Genra. After the tournament and defeating Omega, Hayate returned home now as the 18th master of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan.

The Fourth DOA Tournament and the Fall of DOATEC
Angered for his clan being used as guinea pigs for DOATEC's inhuman experiments, Hayate resolved to take the corrupt corporation down with help from the CIA. As the fourth tournament approached, the Mugen Tenshin Clan set out to defeat DOATEC once and for all. Before they left for the DOATEC Tritower, Hayate encountered Kasumi, who tried to convince him to simply return to the village and prevent all-out war against DOATEC. Still filled with shame and grief over Kasumi being a renegade, Hayate didn't speak a word to her. However, Ayane intervened and stopped her sister, asking Hayate to go ahead without her. He left Ayane and Kasumi to battle. Hayate commanded his men to attack the Tritower, and with the assistance of Irene, he entered the building with Ayane and Hayabusa, fighting through DOATEC's private army. Part-way through the attack, he encountered Lisa (in her wrestling persona La Mariposa), who hinted that she had something to do with his vendetta against DOATEC. Hayate merely replied that she had done him a favor and repaid her with a fight. Hayate encountered Hitomi once again, who pleaded for him to come back with him to the dojo, admitting that she did not know what to do without him. Hayate told her that he couldn't because he was no longer Ein, and the fourth tournament was no tournament at all, but a war between DOATEC and his people. He then asked her to spar for a warm-up, for old time's sake, which she happily accepted. After the fight, they told each other to take care and Hitomi took her leave, obviously upset by the parting. In the end, Hayate joined up with Ayane again, and they tried to fight their way out as Ayane's Art of the Raging Mountain God spell starts to burn down the building. As they tried to leave, they were set upon by Alpha-152, the now-enhanced, new form of Kasumi Alpha. Despite the clone's strength and super-power abilities, the two shinobi managed to escape it and the Tritower complex as it burnt to the ground. During the escape, he also encountered Bayman and fought him, but both separated to focus on escaping the fallen building.

Dealings with DOATEC and the Attack on the MIST Laboratory
For the next two years the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan would know relative peace. One day, Helena, DOATEC's new President and CEO, gives Hayate an invitation to the luxury yacht Freedom Survivor. Transported there by Zack, he wonders what Helena wants from him. Zack jokingly tells him that maybe she was setting him up with someone, although Hayate initially took it wrong. Zack corrects himself explaining he was to have a meeting with her. In the Executive Office, he meets his sister, Kasumi. Helena considers it an honor to have the eighteenth Master Ninja of the Mugen Tenshin in her presence, and proceeds to explain to him that Kasumi's clone, Alpha-152 is still at large, and that it would be too dangerous for Kasumi to do alone. Kasumi asks him to listen to her (Kasumi), that the Alpha affair was her mess alone to settle. However, Hayate agrees with Helena, saying that this whole issue is not just about her anymore, but the safety of their whole family and clan. But Kasumi runs out, saying that it was her fight alone. Hayate follows her and senses something was amiss. His youngest sister Ayane comes forth and lets him know that she's sensing something foul about Kasumi too. Hayate orders her to follow her, and find out her true intentions. Sometime later, Hayate is met by his best friend Hayabusa at the Ryugaku Temple. Hayabusa criticizes him for not being able to handle Kasumi and provokes him to fight each other, and Hayate was defeated; after the battle, the Master Ninja told him that don't let his emotions cloud his judgement. A few days later, he meets Bayman in the Middle East, and wonders what he was up to. Bayman tells him that he and Hayate are both looking for Kasumi for answers and they fight about it in hand-to-hand combat. Zack interrupts their battle, telling Hayate that Helena needs to talk about something important. At the Freedom Survivor Helena tells him about a group called MIST. This group, according to her, was inside of DOATEC before they had a formal name, and that the Alpha project is in its final phase: Phase 4, which is the production and distribution of super soldiers to their clients, the militaries of the world's dominant nations. Hayate is infuriated to learn that he, his family, and his clan were used for the sole purpose of profit for Donovan. Helena tells Hayate that she has sent Kasumi to the Offshore Platform because of uncanny comings and goings from Miyako, Christie, and Lisa. Hayate, Hayabusa, and Ayane head to the location to stop Donovan's plans. During this time, the fifth DOA tournament is being held and on stopover, Hayate reunites with Hitomi, who proudly tells him that she's in the finals. He has a friendly spar with her to prepare her for her final match. Then he leaves with Ayane, but wishes Hitomi good luck. The two Mugen Tenshin ninja find Bayman again, who is infiltrating the rig to find Kasumi. Hayate fights him to see who will deal with his sister and wins. Bayman then helps him and Ayane find Kasumi and they confront her, who was in reality a Kasumi Alpha clone programmed into thinking that she is the original. After killing the clone, Hayate, Bayman, and Ayane head to deeper into the platform. Taking an ID card off of a scientist they knocked unconscious, they discover the platform was actually a cover for MIST's operations. Bayman tells the two ninja to carry on without him and finish the battle. At the lowest level, Hayate and Ayane confront Rig. The hooded man taunts Hayate into a battle, who emerges victorious, but suddenly, the ninja is impaled with beams of light. As he is captured by Rig, Ayane is forced to flee to warn Hayabusa. As the real Kasumi appears to rescue him, Lisa appears and realizes that Donovan is reactivating Project Epsilon, proceeding to override the process when he activates Phase 4. After the scientist frees Hayate, the ninja destroy Alpha-152 and escape the crumbling facility back to the Freedom Survivor. After Kasumi gives her thanks to him, Hayate watches with Ayane and Hayabusa as his sister leaves to defeat Donovan.
Relationships
Kasumi
Kasumi is Hayate's younger sister. Hayate was a very protective and understanding brother to Kasumi and they had a close brother/sister relationship. After Hayate was injured by Raidou, Kasumi sought revenge on Raidou for what he did to her dear brother, seeking to restore his honor. They have a very strong bond, even as Hayate becomes the leader of the Mugen Tenshin Clan and Kasumi becomes a runaway shinobi. Hayate will never harm Kasumi himself, but in the past, he would not speak to her out of the shame he feels over Kasumi's abandonment. Still, no matter what, Hayate and Kasumi will always be loyal to each other. In Dead or Alive 5, Kasumi and Hayate seem to be on better terms with each other, as they speak and work together to stop Phase 4 of Donovan's Alpha plan. He is shown to know his younger sister well, as he caught on almost immediately in Dead or Alive 5 that the Kasumi seen in the beginning of the game was not the real Kasumi, but simply her clone, Alpha. They gain a long overdue tag union in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate consisting of one tag with each leading, one pre-animated sequence, one winning sequence, and personally calling each other when tagging. Kasumi leads in an "Oboro-type" tag, whereas in the second tag where Hayate leads they perform ninja aerial techniques, lifting the opponent sky high before ending with Kasumi kicking them repeatedly to the ground. As Ein, because he didn’t remember her, Ein had a somewhat antagonistic and mistrusting relationship towards Kasumi during the second DOA tournament.

Ayane
The connection between Ayane and Hayate is strong, even though he doesn’t care for her as much as Kasumi. Hayate is Ayane's half-brother, although he was unaware of this as Ayane's heritage was kept secret. When she was a child, Hayate was one of the few people who did not see Ayane as a "demon child". His kindness towards her, combined with his strength and resolve, led Ayane to admire Hayate greatly, an admiration that may have turned into love. Though it is unknown if Hayate is even aware of these feelings, let alone if he returns them, their familial bond is most definitely evident. He is also shown to be protective of her, as shown when he fought Brad Wong for trying to make a pass at her. They remain at each other's side and look out and protect one another as partners-in-arms. As Ein, because he didn’t remember her, Ein had a somewhat antagonistic and mistrusting relationship towards Ayane during the second DOA tournament.

Ryu Hayabusa
It is unclear exactly when the two met but Hayate and Hayabusa have always been the best of friends, serving as an example of the close relations the two clans had with one another. Before his abduction by DOATEC, Hayate had Hayabusa promise to look over Kasumi; thusly when Kasumi was to appear in the Dead or Alive Tournaments, he agreed to participate as well. Hayabusa and Hayate also share similar techniques, probably due to them practicing together as kids. This is evidenced from during the 3rd tournament, as seen through Dead or Alive: Dimensions, when Hayate and Hayabusa simultaneously executed a master ninja rank Ninpo on each other. As both were born to be the next leaders of their clans and have assumed the positions, the two are able to relate to each other on a level apart from other shinobi in their clans, as well as having a friendly rivalry and intense trust in each other’s loyalty and abilities.

Hitomi
Hitomi found Hayate in the Black Forest in Germany. After being used for the Epsilon Project, he didn't remember anything so she brought him back to the family dojo, where her family took him in and named him "Ein". The two of them trained together under Hitomi’s father, and were close enough to being friends. Ein was trusted enough to become an instructor in the dojo. Years later Ein departed for the second Dead or Alive tournament, where he recovered from his amnesia. After this, Ein remembered who he was and left for the Mugen Tenshin Ninja Clan. Despite Hayate moving on with the Mugen Tenshin, and hardly ever seeing her, Hitomi still had feelings for him; she is the only non-ninja person to have any type of relationship with him. During the third and fourth Dead or Alive Tournaments, Hitomi tried to convince Hayate to go back to Germany with her, but he tells her he cannot return with her having to settle this pleading by challenging her to a fight. Hayate trusts Hitomi so much to the point that he admits that he is a ninja, which is an important secret to keep. Although she hates to let him go, Hitomi accepts this and allows him to continue his life as a ninja. Despite all that happened in Dead or Alive 5, they both met again, Hitomi asked Hayate if she could fight with him in a friendly match, which Hayate accepted. After the fight, Ayane appeared and Hayate had no choice but to continue his mission to destroy Alpha-152 and Donovan's new organization, MIST, Hayate bid farewell to Hitomi and she looked at him in hope that they will meet again in the future, which they most likely will.

Jann Lee
During the events of Dead or Alive 2, Ein is Jann Lee’s rival and ace. Winning in tag battles, they will celebrate the victory together. During the events of the third tournament, as Hayate and Hitomi are about to have a friendly battle, Hitomi tries to rush to aid Leifang from Jann Lee's attack which sends her flying into the table but Leifang tells Hitomi to stay out of her affairs. Jann Lee ignores the girls seeing Hayate and asks him to fight with him as he sees that he is a worthy challenge and it is unknown what happened to the girls then.

Helena
In the second tournament, Ein meets Helena Douglas who confused the amnesiac Ein by talking to him about the Epsilon Project but he didn't remember anything about it. In the end, they fight and Helena was defeated by him. Between then and the 5th tournament, the two are on bad terms with each other, since Helena is head of DOATEC which has abused Hayate’s clan for a long time. After the destruction if DOATEC and Helena’s resurfacing with a rejuvenated and much-changed DOATEC, it appears that Helena and Hayate have entered a more professional relationship, as she is able to both contact him and summon him for meetings. The two work together to keep tabs on the remains of DOATEC’s shady business and Donovan.

Lisa
Lisa had been involved with and led Project Epsilon. In Dead or Alive 3, during the catastrophe of the DOATEC lab being destroyed, Hayate and Lisa escaped in a helicopter, which crash landed. Lisa subsequently allowed Hayate to escape and soon regain his memory. In Dead or Alive 4, Lisa flies in on Hayate. Hayate thanks her for making him come destroy DOATEC and giving him a purpose in life, in return for which he battles her and defeats her easily. Later on in Dead or Alive 5, Lisa comes to his aid and frees Hayate from a trap laid by Rig that would have restarted Project Epsilon. What Lisa’s motivations are in assisting Hayate is currently unknown.

Zack
Zack’s main interaction with Hayate has been as Helena’s spokesperson in Dead or Alive 5. He escorts Hayate and Ayane to meet with Helena via helicopter and while flying, jokes to Hayate about setting him up with someone. This irks the shinobi and Zack quickly changes the topic to clear up the misunderstanding. It appears that Hayate at least trusts Zack to go with him, but apparently finds his infinite exuberance and teasing annoying. Zack, meanwhile, has no problem ruffling Hayate’s feathers and tries to get the young shinobi to loosen up.

Bayman
In Dead or Alive 5, Bayman seems to have a slight respect for Hayate, possibly due to him being a shinobi. This has shown during their fight, as Bayman was curious to see what Hayate was capable of. During the attack on MIST, Bayman helps Hayate and Ayane break into the lab. It may be possible that both also respect each other due to their martial art.
PERMISSIONS & KINKS

CHARACTER NAME: Hayate
CHARACTER SERIES: Dead or Alive

[OOC]
Backtagging: Thread-dependent, but generally to the ends of the earth and back again.
Threadhopping: PM before doing so; if all players agree, it’ll be fine.
Fourthwalling: No thanks, unless the thread is already allowing it.
Offensive subjects: No hard no’s, just keep it tactful.
Kinks: Kink-list is
here. Note: This is the mun’s k-list; Hayate’s kinks are decided by his character.

[IC]
Hugging this character: Go for it. He’ll be surprised, but won’t be rude about it if he doesn’t like it. Unless it’s a repeated thing and he’s made it clear it’s a no. Normally Hayate’s kind and he doesn’t mind being affectionate with the people he’s close to, though sometimes his duty as clan leader requires him to be unapproachable. Though he’s a quick hugger so don’t expect to hang on him all day.
Kissing this character: Go for it! He’s not really experienced in this area so he’ll definitely be surprised. If the relationship’s positive, it’s reasonable to expect a kiss back if the relationship’s reached that stage. If it’s negative, however, he’s going to lash out to keep his distance and dignity.
Flirting with this character: Flirt away. Hayate’s a little naïve in terms of flirting since that’s not really been a part of his life, but he’ll definitely recognize it and respond with either something flustered or something cool, depending on his comfort level around your character.
Fighting with this character: Always acceptable. Normally Hayate’s peaceful and gentle so he’ll try to avoid senseless fighting, but he does enjoy a good spar with his friends and others to test his skills. However, if he’s protecting someone, he’ll fight with every ounce of his strength. As a note, he not only comes from a fighting game genre, but he’s an extremely powerful ninja on top of being an expert in two styles of martial arts, so he can and will give an opponent a run for their money.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Hayate’s been injured before and as a fighter/ninja, he’s learned to deal with casual and heavy damage from his missions and fights. However, send a PM to discuss beforehand for something severe like breaking his spine.
Killing this character: Highly-unlikely to happen. A number of people tried in canon and failed.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Go right ahead. He’s a ninja so he might be able to sense it. He’s got a good childhood and adolescence, but things get darker later in his young adult life. Plus there’s amnesia and alternate personality going on in there. Check his history for details. He’ll be mildly offended if someone goes into his head without his permission.
Warnings: None really.
